PERFECT PITCH: BIRCH CREEK CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
PUBLIC BROCHURE TEXT
Perfect Pitch
In tune with the future
A National Reputation
Birch Creek is a school by day and a performance center by night, pairing acclaimed professional musicians with promising young students. By day, rehearsals, classes, and seminars ring out on our rural campus. At night, concert goers have the privilege of listening to the pros perform--and the future pros as well--in a peaceful, rural 40-acre setting. Birch Creek faculty members are that rare combination of high quality performance artist and consummate educator, and students are immersed in the real-life experience of performing before live audiences with the frequency and the varied repertoire that is required of professional musicians. Faculty and students are drawn to Birch Creek from all over the country, and since its beginnings in 1976, Birch Creek has achieved a national reputation for excellence in performance education.
Known and respected for the diverse opportunities we offer serious music students, Birch Creek's physical plant has not kept pace with our reputation. We have grown from 12 students and 1 concert in 1976 to 200 students and 32 concerts on campus in 2006. Yet our student and faculty living facilities are inadequate. As many as 22 students must use bathrooms in a building other than where they sleep. During sessions with our highest enrollments, 40 to 50 students of the same gender must share 4 showers. Students must sometimes practice in small spaces or outdoors, risking damage to their instruments. Sometimes they cannot find a place to practice individually at all. Faculty is required to double up, and one of the faculty sleeping spaces does not have plumbing. In addition, our seasonal facilities offer us little opportunity to support community offerings in the off-season.
Birch Creek leaders propose to extend the campus's ability to better house students and faculty, and extend the opportunities for community programs during the off-season. To meet our needs, we have embarked on a Capital Campaign, Perfect Pitch, that will add 3 new buildings to our forty-acre campus: a Rehearsal Facility / Student Dormitory, a Faculty Housing Facility, and a Maintenance / Storage Building. The new buildings will directly address our student and faculty needs during the summer and provide Birch Creek with four-season facilities in which we can extend 'shoulder season' activities in our local community.
1. 10,000 sq ft year-round facility
2. Sleeping space for 24 students handicapped accessibility
3. 1 large, 1 medium and 3 small rehearsal spaces
4. 6 individual practice rooms
5. Restroom facilities (both student and public)
Faculty Housing Facility
1. 8,854 sq ft year-round facility
2. 20 faculty sleeping rooms, one with handicapped accessibility
3. faculty lounge and computer area
Maintenance / Storage Building
1. 2,792 sq ft year-round facility
2. Inner shop for small tool storage
3. Outer shop for woodworking and large tool storage
4. Equipment park for vehicles and vehicle maintenance
5. Storage for heavy items in barn loft
Since May 2006, we have quietly raised $1.478 million with the help of volunteer solicitors and generous lead donors, leaving us with a remaining campaign goal of $1.522. We can meet this goal with your help during the public phase of our campaign in the summer of 2007.

Statement
My visit as a guest artist to the orchestral session in 2005 and the jazz session in 2006 revealed an incredible attitude by the faculty. These first rate professionals deeply enjoy playing together and sharing their music experience with the students. The current campaign to improve the physical environment for the students, faculty, their supporters, and the Door County community is important to signify the progress of the institution and lay the groundwork for a stronger future.

Statement
Music is soothing, happy, entertaining, distracting -- just like young people! Putting the two of them together is what Birch Creek does so wonderfully. We have had two grandchildren who have been students at Birch Creek. They continue with their music as adults and sing the praises of their summers at Birch Creek. Please help us keep these musicians coming.
