Board of Trustees

Birch Creek is governed by a 20 member board selected to serve three-year terms. Trustees are Door County residents identified for their accomplishments in the arts, humanities, business, education or public service. The board includes members from urban and rural areas across Door County and from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Board members set policy for Birch Creek and work with the executive director to approve budgets annually.

Mona Christensen, Executive Director

Mona Christensen came to Birch Creek after 27 years at UW-Green Bay as the Director of Camps and Conferences. In addition, for 5 years she was the Ministries Director and campaign director at a mega church in Green Bay. Her lifelong administrative work engaged administration, faculty, staff and volunteers to serve youth to senior citizen clientele in both credit and non-credit programming environments. She is experienced in meeting the educational needs of musicians and students, as well as technologies needed to operate a music education program. Mona holds a music degree and an advanced degree in Administrative Science-Management. She is a flautist who taught flute privately for 20 years. In addition, she has performed in a number of community and church bands, flute choirs, and orchestras over the years. She and her husband, Dave, reside in Jacksonport.

Ann Johnson, Finance and Business Manager

A member of the Birch Creek team since 2001, Ann's experience ranges from teaching at the post-secondary level to private sector and non-profit treasury management. Ann holds degrees in linguistics and business management from Loyola University, Chicago, and currently serves on the Treasury Management Team funding the worldwide mission outreach of the Moravian Church in North America.

Carl Shakal, Facilities Manager

Carl retired from the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, UW-Green Bay, as Director of Finance in 2006.  He then began a career in healthcare, first as a CNA, then as an LPN and worked at different long-term care facilities in the County as well as the Community Clinic of Door County until it closed in March of 2016.  Carl is a Viet Nam veteran (USN) and holds a Bachelor’s Degree from UW-Green Bay, and a Master’s in Arts Administration from UW-Madison.  He has owned and managed residential and commercial properties in Green Bay for over 20 years.  He joined Birch Creek as Facilities Manager in July of 2016.


Michelle Naese, Office and Registration Manager

Michelle started with Birch Creek in 2015 as Administrative and Office Support Assistant, and she is currently the academy’s Registrar and Office Manager. She holds an Associate’s Degree from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College – Green Bay. Michelle has 10 years’ experience as a law office clerk. She also enjoys music, and has been playing the trumpet since 5th grade.


Kate Rericha, Grants and Development Manager

A leading grants administrator and grant writer for nonprofit organizations in the arts, health and human service, and public education, Kate Rericha is an arts educator with over forty years of experience in a variety of environments including PK-12 public and
private education, technical college, and nursing home program administration. Kate holds a Bachelor of Art Education degree from UW-Oshkosh with a minor in English. As Secretary of the Board of the Egg Harbor Business Association and Secretary of the Board of Directors of Arts Wisconsin (Madison), Kate serves her local community through board leadership and her state community through arts advocacy and program evaluation. She has been with Birch Creek since 2005.


Ian Johnson, Marketing and Media Specialist

Ian has played significant roles in creative marketing projects in Door County and across the Midwest. He graduated from Loras College in 2014 with a Bachelors of Science Degree with studies in both Biology and Marketing. Ian has maintained a close relationship to Jazz as a drummer for over 8 years. He spent nearly 2 years in the Chicagoland area developing brand presence and marketing strategies for an online retailer before returning to Door County to put his skills in social media, design, and photography to work at Birch Creek in 2016.
