Board of Trustees

Birch Creek is governed by a 20 member board selected to serve three-year terms. Trustees are Door County residents identified for their accomplishments in the arts, humanities, business, education or public service. The board includes members from urban and rural areas across Door County and from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Board members set policy for Birch Creek and work with the executive director to approve budgets annually.

Administrative Staff

Mona Christensen
Executive Director, the Steve and Jackie Kane Chair

Mona Christensen became Birch Creek’s Executive Director in 2015 after a 27-year career at UW-Green Bay as the Director of Camps and Conferences. In addition, she served as Ministries Director at a large church in Green Bay for five years. Her lifelong administrative work engaged administration, faculty, staff and volunteers to serve youth to senior citizen clientele in both credit and non-credit programming environments. She is experienced in meeting the educational needs of musicians and students, as well as technologies needed to operate a music education program. Mona holds a music degree and an advanced degree in Administrative Science-Management. As a flautist, she taught flute privately for 20 years and has performed in a number of community and church bands, flute choirs, and orchestras over the years.

Bob Volpe
Facilities Manager

Bob Volpe joins the Birch Creek staff with several years of maintenance experience in the villages of Sister Bay, Ephraim and at Fish Creek Condos. While in the US Navy/Naval Reserve he developed technical training materials for operations and maintenance, along with managing budgets, personnel training and oversaw day to day operations. Bob is a local volunteer firefighter and emergency medical responder. He has a degree in Computer Information Systems.

Michelle Naese
Office and Registration Manager

Michelle started with Birch Creek in 2015 as Administrative and Office Support Assistant, and she is currently the academy’s Registrar and Office Manager. She holds an Associate’s Degree from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College – Green Bay. Michelle has 10 years’ experience as a law office clerk. She also enjoys music, and was a trumpet player through high school.

Amy Phillips
Business Manager

Amy Phillips, an experienced finance and business management professional, joined Birch Creek in October 2019 as Business Manager. She has experience in a variety of environments including public education and non-profit organizations. Amy began her career with the University of Wisconsin System serving as Financial Specialist at the UW-Baraboo campus, and later at the UW-Rock campus. Since moving to Door County, Amy has held positions in health information management for CIOX Corporation and business management for the Sturgeon Bay Boys & Girls Club. Amy holds an Accounting associate degree from Madison Area Technical College. She plays baritone and in her spare time enjoys attending the many musicals and concerts Door County offers.

Kate Rericha
Grants and Development Manager

Kate is an arts educator with experience in a variety of environments including public and private education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Education degree with a minor in English, and has recently completed a course in Fund Raising for the Professional from the Lilly Family School for Philanthropy. Kate serves her local and state communities through board leadership and arts advocacy. She additionally serves on grant review panels for the Wisconsin Arts Board’s competitive grant programs. She has been with Birch Creek since 2005.
