Darren Sterud is a trombonist, bandleader, and educator based in Madison, Wisconsin, known for his dynamic performances in jazz, blues, and New Orleans-style brass band music. A fixture in the Midwest music scene, he has performed with renowned groups such as The Jimmys, Mama Digdown’s Brass Band, the Clyde Stubblefield Blues Band, and the Tony Castaneda Latin Jazz Band.
Sterud studied music performance at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater under trombonist Steve Wiest, honing his skills in jazz improvisation and ensemble playing. Over the years, he has shared the stage with legends like Trombone Shorty, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Leroy Jones, Los Lobos, and B.B. King’s All-Star Band.
Beyond performing, Sterud is passionate about music education. He has taught jazz history, improvisation, and ensemble techniques at workshops and camps across Wisconsin, inspiring the next generation of musicians. He also leads the Darren Sterud Orchestra, a powerhouse big band that brings bold jazz arrangements to local audiences..
