Birch Creek Opens its 2023 Season with “Percussion at the Movies”
EGG HARBOR, Wis. (June 1, 2023) – On Thursday, June 22, Birch Creek Music Performance Center will present its opening night concert – “Percussion at the Movies” – on the Stage of Stars inside the historic Dutton Concert Barn. Opening night at Birch Creek is a festive gathering of concertgoers, returning faculty, new students, donors, volunteers and local businesses celebrating the much-anticipated 2023 season of Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music; Symphony and Big Band Jazz concerts. This year marks Birch Creek’s 48th year of excellence in music education and world-class concert performances.
Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music launches the first two weeks of the 2023 season with concerts featuring faculty performing artists and advanced student musicians. These exceptional professional musicians come together once a year at Birch Creek and perform a wide array of musical styles, including Caribbean steel pan, standard percussion ensembles, classic jazz, world percussion, rearrangements of commercial and popular contemporary pieces, and new music. Dan Moore, Professor of Percussion at University of Iowa, will return for his 25th season and his eighth year as Program Director of the Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music session.
Following opening night, the first week of concerts continues with “Wild Percussion: Music in Nature (Tribute to Roy Lukes)” on Friday, June 23 and “Percussion at the Movies” on Saturday, June 25, at 3:00 PM. On Thursday, June 29, the matinee and evening concerts feature “Artistry in Steel Pan” with Liam Teague. The June 30 concert will feature Percussion: Fun and Funky with internationally known Swedish Vibes Artist, Anders Åstrand. Åstrand is also the featured performer for the James R. Dutton Memorial Concert at 7:00 PM on closing night, July 1.
Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music concerts, including opening night, start at 7:00 PM with student prelude music from the Kane Gazebo at 6:30 PM. Tickets are available for purchase online at BirchCreek.org/Tickets or by phone at (920) 868-3763. Prices are $32 for adults, $10 for students, and $6 for children (11 and under). Premium seating is also available in the front-center section of the Dutton Concert Barn, priced at $38 for all ages. Group rates are also available for parties of 10 or more. Birch Creek Music Performance Center celebrates its 48th year as Door County’s Residential Summer Music Academy in Egg Harbor, WI, for advanced student musicians. With a performance emphasis, students are taught by nationally known performers and educators during the day and perform alongside them in concerts at night. Four sessions focus on Percussion, Steel Pan & World Music; Symphony, and Big Band Jazz. Proceeds from all Birch Creek events and concerts provide support for Birch Creek students.
